Mag-E began as a jam game

In 2017, I was an underclassman at Purdue University, where I heard about the global game jam, a rapid prototyping event held to promote game development. I formed a team with three other attendees and we sought out to create a game where players use magnetic waves to control their character through a sidescrolling level filled with spikes and lasers.

I had only just begun my curriculum in computer science, and so I made myself useful by making character animations for lack of confidence in programming. However, through this event, I made connections That would empower me to grow as an amateur game developer.

In 2020, 3r Interactive became interested in further prototyping Mag-E as research for deciding their next game project. I spent the next two weeks implementing the basic mechanics of the original design in Unity.

iT WAS FUN TO FINALLY TACKLE THE CODE OF THIS PROJECT AFTER YEARS OF THE IDEA SITTING IN THE ICE BOX. My favorite detail is how the strength of the magnets scales inversely with distance.
